The Legend | Naina Dalal
One of India’s distinguished female painters and modern-era printmakers, Naina Dalal was born in 1935, in Vadodara, Gujarat. The veteran artist did her BA in 1957 and MA (Fine) Painting in 1959 from the Faculty of Fine Arts, MSU, Vadodara under the guidance of the greats like NS Bendre and KG Subramanyan. From 1960-63, she studied lithography from Henry Trivik at London Poly-technique and in 1974, she studied etching under Margot Love-Joy at Pratt Graphic Centre, New York.
She has 10+ solo shows to her credit from 1973 and exhibited in cities like Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, Singapore, and Vadodara. She has been part of more than 70+ prestigious group shows from 1959 such as Baroda Group of Artists, Mumbai, South Asian Artists, London, VI Triennale, New Delhi, Nasreen Mohamedi Memorial, Jammu, Bharat Bhavan, Biennale, Bhopal, International Graphic Exhibition, British Columbia, National Printmaking Portfolio, Ahmedabad, to name a few.
Naina Dalal has won several awards and accolades including the 1st prize in Painting, State Art Exhibition, Bombay in 1960 to Gaurav Puraskar, Gujarat State Lalit Kala Academy, Ahmedabad in 2017.
Her works are in private and public collections in India and abroad including eminent art collectors like Pheroza Godrej, Mumbai, Saryu Doshi, Mumbai, David and Penelope Dell, USA, Larsen and Toubro, New Delhi, IPCL/Reliance, Vadodara, Air India, Mumbai, National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, Chase Manhattan Bank, New York, USA, Museum of Oriental Art, UK, Museum of Indian Art, Berlin, Germany, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, UK and The Hermitage, Leningrad, Russia, Indian High Commission, Singapore, and Singapore Art Museum.
