The Storyteller’s Matrix: Where Lines Speak, Legends Live.
The exhibition, The Storyteller’s Matrix, invites viewers to explore a collection of legendary artists, each with a unique way of telling stories through the medium of printmaking. These works convey diverse aspects of human experience and identity, including Atul Dodiya’s exploration of human identity, Sheikh’s focus on devotional literature, Indrapramit Roy’s perspective on spirituality, Jayakumar Reddy’s philosophical insights, Jeram Patel’s abstract modernism, Jyoti Bhatt’s interpretation on cultural identity, KG’s cubist still lifes, PD Dhumal’s depiction of human experience, Rini Dhumal’s mythological narratives, and Vijay Bagodi’s reflections on colonial and post-colonial urbanism.
This exhibition celebrates the legacy of India’s finest artists and their significant contribution in contemporary Indian printmaking. The beauty of these untitled works lies in their open-ended nature. They invite the viewer to create their own interpretations. In some, I too have found my interpretations, crafting meaning within their silence. On the other hand, the titled works offer a guided journey, allowing you to uncover the story through the artist’s perspective, blending your view with theirs.
The Power of Printmaking: Soulprints
Among the many mediums of art, printmaking stands out as a powerful form of storytelling. As a curator and collector, my passion for printmaking, particularly Intaglio, lies in its ability to channel the power of lines and balance tones to create something extraordinary. While the subject undoubtedly matters, for me, printmaking isn’t just about reproducing images; it’s about exploring the possibilities that paper offers—a world canvas cannot replicate.
In etchings, lines are my fascination. They reveal the artist’s mindset, their confidence, and their conviction about the subject they have chosen. When an artist pours their heart into their work, it reflects in every line they etch.If it matters to an artist, it matters to society.
The Artists: Alchemists
The exhibition brings together legendary artists whose contributions to Indian art and printmaking have been monumental. For decades, these artists have been a living school, imparting wisdom and inspiration to printmakers, painters, and intellectuals alike. These artists are not just creators; they are the architects of India’s cultural renaissance. Their works have been celebrated at international and national auctions, adorned with honors like the Padma Vibhushan, and have shaped the very foundation of modern and contemporary Indian art. The subjects, skills, and stories woven into these works offer collectors the rare opportunity to collector a defining chapter in the artist’s evolution.
Process – The engraved expression
Intaglio is a printmaking technique where an image is engraved or incised into a metal plate. The grooves created hold the ink, and pressure is used to transfer the image onto paper. This method includes various types such as etching, engraving, drypoint, and mezzotint.
In etching, the artist begins by drawing with a sharp needle on a metal plate coated with an acid-resistant waxy resin. Once the drawing is complete, the plate is immersed in acid, which bites into the exposed metal areas where the resin was removed, creating grooves. After the plate is cleaned, ink is applied, filling the grooves. The plate is then pressed with paper on top, transferring the design.
This detailed process requires patience, skill, and creativity. Every groove and line reflects the artist’s emotion, making each edition a unique fusion of technique and passion, a true masterpiece.
