Gaja Gamini British Raj Tea Party by MF Husain

1955, Gaja Gamini, 14 x 20 in, Reproduction on Paper, Limited Edition of 300, 2000, LL in English (Pencil Signed)

In this painting, Husain unfolds a surreal moment of leisure and power within the wilderness. Two elegantly dressed women sit in the jungle as though at an English tea party, their refined presence sharply contrasted by the raw setting. The fan in one hand and the pearls on the other evoke colonial elegance, staged against bamboo forests and wild silence.

Beside them, a hunter with rifle stands alert, while behind, a sleek car and looming figures suggest the machinery and shadow of the British Raj. An elephant, placed close to the women, becomes both witness and participant, carrying the symbolic weight of India itself under the gaze of empire.

Husain weaves irony into beauty, showing how cultures meet, collide, and coexist in layered narratives. The jungle is not merely backdrop but a stage where history, hierarchy, and spectacle intertwine.
