Eternal Mother by MF Husain

4356, Eternal Mother, 41 x 30 in, Serigraph on Paper, Limited Edition of 125, 2003, LR in English (Pencil Signed)
In this serigraph, MF Husain immortalises Mother Teresa as the Eternal Mother, a presence of compassion that moves beyond time and place. Her iconic white sari with blue borders defines her figure in strong black lines, her posture bent in care and humility. The black and white palette, punctuated only by the blue accents, amplifies both austerity and grace.
Beside her stands a young girl carrying a pot, a symbol of love and warmth offered by Mother Teresa, reflecting how her work touched even the smallest and simplest lives. A child also appears close, almost leaning into her presence, evoking shelter, security, and a maternal bond that goes beyond blood.
The vertical division of the composition suggests both separation and connection, as if Mother Teresa’s work always stood at the threshold between suffering and hope. The minimal use of colour intensifies the spiritual aura, reminding us that the truest devotion lies in simplicity.
This 2003 serigraph, titled Eternal Mother, reflects Husain’s deep admiration for her legacy, transforming her into an enduring icon of service, love, and humanity.
