The Vertical Horse by MF Husain

3477, The Vertical Horse, 40 x 31 in, Serigraph on Paper, Limited Edition of 125, 2000, LR in English (Pencil Signed)

The first thing you notice in MF Husain’s The Vertical Horse is not just the horses, but the energy that refuses to stand still. They gallop across the canvas with a calm confidence, their strength heightened by Husain’s signature bold black lines. The title itself is a clue as the horses rise, stretch, and charge upward, breaking the flatness of the frame and demanding attention.

Two central horses in yellow and orange emerge as the protagonists, leading the composition with heroic presence, while the background horses run in the opposite direction, a clever counterpoint that balances the scene. The red and magenta grounds divide the canvas, while a blue line and white space act like breath marks, guiding the eye and offering rhythm to the speed. The yellow horse with its white face becomes a pause, a character that anchors the motion and gives the viewer a place to rest.

With minimal colours of red, orange, yellow, and magenta, Husain creates a work that feels both simple and monumental. It is a painting about force, balance, and vitality, where colour and line turn into living movement, and the viewer carries that motion long after leaving the work.
