Horse III by MF Husain

3476, Horse III, 26 x 40 in, Serigraph on Paper, Limited Edition of 125, 2000, LR in English (Pencil Signed)
In this work, MF Husain captures the raw surge of energy through two horses in motion. Their forms, outlined in bold strokes, lean forward as if charging beyond the frame itself. Every bold stroke propels the viewer into their gallop and conveys the very essence of force and speed.
The colours carry symbolic weight. The earthy ochres and browns ground the horses with strength, while the orange flashes become a streak of vitality and inspiration, suggesting fire as a source of drive and determination. The white horse symbolises peace and balance, yet even here Husain transforms calmness into motion, showing that serenity too can carry unstoppable momentum. Together, these tones create a conversation of power and harmony.
The rectangular boundary within the painting functions as a structure, but the horses strain against it, breaking limits and suggesting freedom beyond imposed borders. Background washes of ochre, beige, and deep green balance the composition while amplifying the intensity that bursts forward.
What emerges is not merely two animals in gallop but the spirit of Husain’s horses themselves, symbols of freedom, strength, and unstoppable drive.
