British Raj by MF Husain

1411, British Raj, 60 x 30 in, Serigraph on Paper, Limited Edition of 200, 2000, LR in English (Pencil Signed)

The moment you stand before MF Husain’s British Raj it feels like entering a stage where history performs in colour and line. With assured strokes, Husain gathers the echo of empire and the rhythm of Indian life into one vivid frame. The title fixes the subject, yet the story opens in layers.

At the top, British soldiers in grey helmets hold steady. Around them Indian motifs burst with vitality. A dancer lifts her hand, an elephant glows in yellow, a queen-like profile appears, and a white horse carries speed. Near the base a train signals industrial advance and imperial reach, while the camel speaks of tradition, trade, and cultural continuity. A cannon sits as a tool of rule, yet the raised hand reads as blessing, and performance carries the scene forward.

Bold black lines shape the mosaic like stained glass, giving each figure its place while keeping the whole in harmony. Primary colours lead the eye. Red brings life, blue brings resolve, yellow brings warmth and wealth, and green brings continuity. Greys steady the field so the hues shine.

This serigraph becomes a union of modern design and living memory, where authority and resilience share the same stage.
