Toofan Rafai, born in 1921 in Amreli, Gujarat, devoted his life to the exploration of vegetable dyes, significantly impacting the Progressive Art Movement with his unwavering passion for art. He moved to Mumbai to pursue his artistic education, earning a Diploma in Painting from the Sir J. J. School of Arts in 1955. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of simplicity, Rafai became fascinated with vegetable dyes, ultimately discovering and formulating around 300 unique shades.

From 1960 to 1979, he served as the Assistant Director at the Weavers’ Service Centre, where he contributed to numerous research and development projects. His expertise extended to consultancy roles in natural dyes and printing at the National Institute of Design (NID) and the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA). A founding member of the Art Council of Indian Artists in New Delhi, Rafai held significant positions in various art organizations across India.

In his later years, Rafai’s work evolved into paper collages that reflect the modern environment while honoring the resilience and strength of traditional Indian women. His art celebrates true feminism, showcasing how women adapt to contemporary challenges without losing their cultural roots. Rafai’s mastery lies in his selection and application of materials, making his works highly collectible and ensuring that his artistic legacy endures even after his passing a few years ago.

His works evoke Karuna Rasa, highlighting the struggles and adaptability of women in contemporary society, along with Veer Rasa, showcasing the heroism of today’s women.
