Piraji Sagara was a prominent Indian painter and sculptor hailing from Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Born on February 2, 1931, he earned his Master’s degree in Drawing in 1957 and a Master’s in Arts in 1960 from the renowned Sir J. J. School of Art in Bombay.
His artistic vision was profoundly influenced by the folk traditions of Gujarat, and his works were exhibited globally, including the São Paulo Biennale in Brazil in 1971 and various exhibitions across Europe and Japan. He also participated in the 12th International Festival of Painters in Cagne Sur-Mer, France.
Sagara’s art often explored intricate themes, such as the relationship between humans and nature, the chaos of existence, and the mysteries of life. His works were characterized by a rich materiality that complemented their narrative depth, reflecting the complexities of life through forms that resonated with the cultural heritage of Gujarat. Throughout his career, Sagara stood alongside celebrated artists like M.F. Husain, S.H. Raza, and Jeram Patel, marking his significance in the Indian art landscape.
From 1963 until his retirement, Sagara taught at the School of Architecture at CEPT University in Ahmedabad, continuing to mentor students until his passing on January 23, 2014. His legacy is commemorated at CEPT University, where the basement of the Faculty of Architecture is named in his honor.
Sagara’s collection evokes the Sringara Rasa, centered on love, beauty, and sensuality, conveying the emotional depth of romantic and physical intimacy. It invites viewers to explore themes of attraction, desire, and the complexities of human relationships, celebrating the beauty of love and intimacy while nurturing rich emotional connections. Alongside this, his horses depict strength, nobility, and valor, symbolizing courage and adventure, evoking the Veer Rasa.
