Gaja Gamini Kerala Jungle by MF Husain

1954, Gaja Gamini, 14 x 20 in, Reproduction on Paper, Limited Edition of 300, 2000, LL in English (Pencil Signed)
In this artwork, Husain presents the unforgettable image of a woman carrying a gathri on her head, walking with quiet confidence through a dense Kerala jungle. Her figure, seen from the back, speaks of strength and movement, her steps guided by rhythm and balance.
Around her, yellow elephants appear almost hidden among bamboo, their placement forming a striking composition of vertical energy and subtle guardianship. The elephants seem to echo her presence, as if nature itself walks alongside her. The contrast of her red blouse and dark sari with the luminous yellow of the elephants and the earthy background creates a harmony of colour that feels both intimate and monumental.
Husain turns this moment into more than a journey through the jungle. It becomes a vision of woman and nature moving as one, where the gathri on her head is not just a bundle but a symbol of dignity, tradition, and resilience.
