Gaja Gamini Three Women Artwork by MF Husain

1953, Gaja Gamini, 14 x 20 in, Reproduction on Paper, Limited Edition of 300, 2000, LL in English (Pencil Signed)
In this artwork, MF Husain places three women within two contrasting spaces. Inside a dimly lit room, one woman lies close to a lamp, her body stretched as though in search of warmth or thought. Beside her, another figure sits in quiet contemplation, wearing a blue saree, her stillness echoing silence.
Outside, a third woman stands upright, holding a harmonium, her presence filled with poise and rhythm. Husain personifies women as both stillness and movement, intimacy and performance, enclosed space and open world.
The simple forms of the walls and drapery frame the scene, while the yellow glow of the lamp and the blue of the saree give the composition its mood of contrast. It is an intimate glimpse into how women carry multiple worlds within them, private, reflective, and public.
