Gaja Gamini Women and Elephants by MF Husain

1951, Gaja Gamini, 14 x 20 in, Reproduction on Paper, Limited Edition of 300, 2000, LL in English (Pencil Signed)

In this artwork, Husain paints a radiant celebration of womanhood as a cosmic rhythm. Against the glowing yellow circle of the moon, a group of female figures rise and sway in unison, their gestures echoing dance, ritual, and freedom. The bodies, outlined in strong black strokes, form a chorus of movement that seems timeless and universal.

At the edges, we glimpse elephants alongside women, their presence evoking the very essence of Gaja Gamini—grace that carries the weight of strength. The elephants become companions to the dancing women, grounding their rhythm in the power of the earth while the women lift it towards the sky. The small boat and barren tree with white birds suggest journey and renewal, as if life’s dance never ends.

Husain transforms the scene into a hymn to energy and resilience, where women and elephants together personify strength, grace, and eternal rhythm, painted with simplicity yet filled with infinite meaning.
