Mother and Child Ganesha by M F Husain

1208, Asthavinayak, 14 x 20 in, Reproduction on Paper, Limited Edition of 500, 1998, LR in English (Pencil Signed)

This scene opens like a lullaby. Parvati Mata reclines in quiet grace, her gaze protective, while beside her sits a childlike Ganesha holding a small orb — a fruit that is also the world in play. The intimacy of home becomes the first temple.

Husain’s lines move like whispers, light and gentle, giving form without weight. The teal background deepens space, while gold and yellow spread warmth across skin and cloth. Washes merge softly, feathered edges letting light seep through.

The blessing hand here carries maternal assurance, a palm that promises safety. In this work, the divine is neither distant nor heroic, but tender and near. The memory it plants is that of care as sacred, where belonging is devotion and a child’s play is creation itself.
