Horse V by MF Husain

3722, Kerala V, 41 x 40 in, Serigraph on Paper, Limited Edition of 225, 2001, LR in English (Pencil Signed)
A room glows with reading light and quiet rhythm. The title says Kerala, and Husain shows it through dress, habit, and home. A man in a white-bordered kasavu mundu reads a large newspaper on a wooden armchair. Across the room, a lady sits on a red cot and looks toward a pale blue window. A wall clock keeps gentle time.
The most important element is the colour balancing. Minimal yet effective tones are arranged with mastery. The orange line on the dhoti and the red cot, the yellow ochre and browns above and below, and the blue that lifts the lady and window create an amazing composition. Notice the tilak on the reader’s forehead and the white in her hair used as a hair clip. These small notes bring perfect balance and focus. This is a true masterclass in colour.
The painting is built with clear angles of chair, cot, and window that form a clean architecture. The newspaper becomes a broad plane that anchors the left side. Firm black lines hold the forms, while small marks for hair and clock hands add presence.
In spirit, it is Kerala through habit and learning, inviting the viewer to feel reading light, cloth, wood, and calm.
