Kerala III by MF Husain

3720, Kerala III, 41 x 40 in, Serigraph on Paper, Limited Edition of 225, 2001, LR in English (Pencil Signed)
The composition sings like a lyrical hymn to Kerala. At the centre, a woman rests within the embrace of an elephant’s trunk, while another silver-white young elephant looks on. The larger green elephant shelters her with calm strength. She lifts a circular emblem with a baby elephant, and around them bamboo and banana fronds rise as white lilies open below.
The core energy is guardianship and grace. The viewer experiences a tender bond between human and animal, a vision of devotion, protection, and nature’s rhythm. The elephant’s hold reads as care and blessing, a temple memory where the gentle giant guides and safeguards.
The painting is built with clear verticals from trunks and bamboo that steady the frame, while the soft arcs of arm and elephant spine create flow. Edges are decisive, giving each form its own breath.
Colour shapes the atmosphere. Forest greens suggest habitat and tradition. Creams and stone greys soften the young elephant and figure with tenderness. Ochres and straw tones recall sunlit cane. Violets and lilacs add lyrical notes, and a deep blue thicket evokes backwater dusk.
Deeper layers reveal Kerala through emblems of gaja, grove, and water. Scale and intimacy meet, making the work protective, lyrical, and deeply human.
