Kerala I by MF Husain

3718, Kerala I, 41 x 40 in, Serigraph on Paper, Limited Edition of 225, 2001, LR in English (Pencil Signed)

Kerala arrives like a festival held in a single breath. Husain names the work simply and lets iconography speak. A Kathakali performer steps forward, the attendant holds a flower, and at the centre Ganesha plays a veena-like instrument, joining the celebration as a festival musician. A ghatam player appears nearby, that clay pot rhythm of the South.

The heartbeat is celebration with discipline. What unfolds is a scene where ritual, performance, music, and devotion share one frame with ease.

It is built with bold black lines that secure form, long diagonals from stride and sword that create forward motion, and curves of trunk, anklets, and lotus that soften the pace. As a serigraph on paper, layered inks give crisp edges and a luminous surface.

Colours set the climate. Vermilion red brings lamp-light. Orange honours GaneshaDeep blue cools the field. Sap green ties performance to landscape. The vibrancy of purple adds regal warmth to Indian cultureMustard and earth browns suggest temple cloth and goods. Clean whites give clarity.
The colours and composition feel good to the eyes and guide the viewer gently across the scene.

Deeper layers reveal Kerala through living practices, a universal scene of devotion and joyThis is Husain’s grace: great scale from a few sure signs.
