Padma Vibhushan K.G. Subramanyan, born in 1924 in Kerala, was a distinguished artist who completed his diploma in fine arts at Visva Bharati University, Kala Bhavan, Shantiniketan. There, he studied under renowned artists such as Benode Bihari Mukherjee, Nandalal Bose, and Ramkinkar Baij, before continuing his education at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. Subramanyan held numerous solo and group exhibitions both in India and internationally and was frequently featured in various prestigious auction houses around the world.

His artistic style was significantly influenced by folk art from Kerala, Kalighat paintings, Pattachitra from Bengal and Odisha, and traditional Indian court paintings. Subramanyan passed away in 2016, leaving behind a remarkable legacy.

This work exemplifies K.G. Subramanyan’s signature style, showcasing the lines, emotions, and expressions of both the subject and the artist, which are hallmarks of India’s artistic masters. A notable feature of this piece is the artist’s use of acrylic brush strokes combined with a gradation of blue and gold. Gold plays a prominent role in the composition.
